Thank god I've got Cathys 'Ugly Duckling' FE to drive for the next few months    ;D

No more boring beige, dirty, rustbucket to be attending the Nats in !

NOOOO!!

Do the "Ugly Duckling".

Just tell the guys to leave the wagons personality intact ;D.

Dean.

Dean
I'd love to leave any part of the wagon intact
but I dont think the rust will hold anything intact much longer !

and I can't do the ''ugly duckling" as that would mean spending money on it

and the rebuild begins (or at least the pulling apart )

on the chicken rotisserie

a previous "modification"  (and MORE bloody locusts !)

Flames fitted wheels to the rotisserie and the whole lot went on the tilt tray to the sand blasters, to give them access to every nook and cranny

G'day Paul,    The answer is .....       YES

Flames said three months. And gave me an estimated quote

and I believe him    :o ::)  ???  ;D.

But if I rock up to our Nats in the "Ugly Duckling" and I'm completely pennyless you'll know something went HORRIBLY wrong.

I expect it to take a while ( and cost a bit ). We're doing it properly not a patch up job. Theres a few previous "modifications" that need to be fixed up and theres a few minor modifications I want to add to it while its all apart. I want it in tip top shape for our Nats and I want it to last another 50 years.

It's Flames (and his team of specialists) full time job not a weekend fix up thing. I just have to pay for the labour and parts and materials and etc etc etc.......

Got to go now,  I've just received the first bill, so i've got more overtime at work to do  :D

One of the previous modifications...

the 'Lets just tack weld a new trans tunnel over the old one and leave a dirt and moisture holding double skin' modification
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/4-3.jpg)

We found a couple of fibreglass repair patches from the original rebuild ( It was built by a previous owner approx 20 years ago)
bottom of both front guards
and the bottom of both rear doors (which are now in the rubbish bin)

and SUPRISE... we found some rust !
heres just some of it
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/6-2.jpg)

but not as much as I expected

Title: Re: Withdrawal syptoms

And the job continues..

The trans tunnel has had a trim and tidy up... no double skin, no sharp edges and welded ALL the way around now

Found the usual rusty bits
Drivers floor, bottom of pillars and most of the tailgate and rear end.

Drivers side sill
was a bit rusty.....and a different profile to the passenger side sill (and the sills on Flames FCs)

the profiles
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/16.jpg)

every tiny hole gets filled
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/10.jpg)

and after 11 years of driving the wagon all over the country...
my question has been answered

 Q.   What is holding my seatbelts onto the B pillar ?
 A.   One small nut !

So it's being modified with a welded in reinforcing plate
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/13.jpg)

some of the modifications that Flames is doing along the way

Radiator support panel thing. (the original dissapeared during those earlier "modifications" when the bigger radiator was fitted
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/5.jpg)

The gearbox mount has been strengthened so its not supported by 4 bolts through a rusty floor. And modified so gearbox can be removed without ripping out interior carpets and seats  ;D
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/9.jpg)

Got to go now,  and ask the boss for some more overtime
another bill has arrived in the mailbox

And I had to apologize to Flames for the mess all over his workshop floor

after 12 months we're still finding locusts (now I know where that horrible smell was coming from)

just a little bit of info on the sills, the drivers side had been replaced about 15 years ago but the profile was wrong so i ordered another from rare parts over here in perth. i had lent them a NOS sill about 5 years ago which they used as a template, so they could have there own made up
when i picked it up i thought it didnt look right and told them i would check it when i got home, they said they had sold a lot and no one else had said anything.
when i got back i checked and the profile was wrong so i made a cardboard template and took it back so they could re-do it.
over the years i suppose they have had different guys on the bender and it has changed, so they re did it and now it is spot on
cheers
craig

Cathy came around to Flames workshop for the first time since we dropped off the wagon.

She nearly cried when she saw it    :o   :'(
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/3-1.jpg)

lucky she didn't see it when it was on the rottiserie full of rust holes  ;D

I don't think she fully realized what she agreed to when she said I could spend some money doing it up ready for the Nationals

Title: Re: Withdrawal syptoms
Post by: surferboy on July 21, 2011, 07:20:59 PM
Five minutes before I go do MORE overtime  :'(
just enough time to post a couple of pics

The wagons back on its wheels again with all the holes filled in, the undercarriage is all rustproofed and painted. Craigs going to put it back together to make sure all the panels fit correctly before smoothing everything out and pulling it all apart for painting

No more ratty holes in the door

front end together and painted. it looks better when its not covered in dust

can't remember what this was ? I'm sure you can figure it out  ??? ::)

the bottom of a door that was saved, and the holey piece that came of it
Flames found fiberglass repairs in the bottom of all the doors. They were very well done (about 18 years ago) and if I hadn't sandblasted and taken the easier option of rubbing back and respraying they could have been overlooked. Now its all steel, rustproofed and painted

in the driveway
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/14.jpg)

ps I think pic3 was the new sill all fitted. straight, rust free and the correct profile

It's all back together now

well.....
for a short time at least

test fitting all the panels,  the repaired ones and the replacement ones

The bonnet repair was left till last because it was a pig of a job

was rusted through the front edge from inside to outside
but it's all fixed now   ;D

we're playing around with some of the modifications I want
here's one

Now it's primer, bog, rub, primer, bog, rub etc etc time
to smooth out any imperfections  (but it is pretty straight as is)
that rear left patch is from a dent my neighbour put there reversing out of his driveway

and getting straighter Nick

bogging-priming-rubbing-bogging-priming-rubbing-bogging-priming-rubbing etc. etc, etc,

A few bits on the bonnet to smooth over
and those high/low spots to level out

Then it's PAINT time  ;D

Nick. you can't copy the tailfins cos then it wont be different to the rest  :'(
(of course you can  ;D.  BUT they don't fit without modifiying them with a big angle grinder  :o  ;D)
and now we're playing around with some other bits to modify as it goes back together..  just to make it that little bit different

and MORE paint  ;D ;D ;D

I was going to keep this all a secret and suprise you at the Nats
but I'm hopless at keeping secrets and got excited about showing you how good it looks

3 tone ?

Because of the hassles trying to figure out stainless (chrome) options to seperate paint colours, we've chosen to do a subtle silver pinstripe extending from the tailfins to seperate the white and blue
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/b2.jpg)

The  orignal plan was to finish the blue at the diagonal stainless piece that comes down the back door. But HORRIBLE bodylines on the wagon around the windows and door area meant we needed another plan. So we've extended the blue along the body to the front door. And this proved to be the better look as it will tie in the blue better with the blue that will go on the dashboard  and inside the front doors. And it lengthens the body rather than making it 'boxy' with just the short blue patch.
long view.  and the pinstripe dissapears from view but still divides the blue/white join
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/b3.jpg)

then you replace the stainlesss trim bits and it goes BLING   :o
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/b1.jpg)
(even with the dirty stainless bits  :D)

Got to go now
I've been spending on some original pieces of stuff that will go into the rebuild (sshh these ARE secret  ;))
and I've got to see the boss for 6 weekends of overtime so I can buy the $1500 rubber kit  :o I need so it can start going back together

 ;D ;D ;D

All I want for Xmas is my two front teeth...whoops... I meant to say I wanted the wagon back on the road
But it didn't happen  :'(

It's back on its side again
I think Flames stole part of a rollercoaster ride and turned it into a car roller over thingy *
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/1-4.jpg)

It makes it a lot easier to fit brake lines and other undercarriage stuff #.

and while the twopack has been drying some of the other bits and pieces are being done
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/4-4.jpg)

and (another one of the bits I was going to keep secret. But I can't resist showing you) the custom built underdash panel to fit all the gauges, switches, caravan brake controller, security system, horn, hazardlights, power outlets, etc etc
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/3-4.jpg)
The large panel fits up under the hinged speaker grille and houses the stereo system and fuse box

The blue is also a commodore series II colour.  Voodoo Blue
Looks good in the sun   ;D

Got to go now
I've got overtime to do    whoops NO OVERTIME this week  :D I'm going on HOLIDAYS   ;D ;D ;D

* thingy. a term used by surferboy when he doesn't know the correct name of something  ::)

stereo and fusebox all tuck away and are hidden by the speaker grille
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/aaa4.jpg)

the roof lining and the glass are all going back in as the photos are being taken
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/aaa3.jpg)

grille bits from the wagon and stolen bits from the Ugly Duckling give me a straight shiny grille
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/aaa2.jpg)

gearlever placement will be sorted when we fit the bench back in
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/aaa5.jpg)

the old grey motor just needs a couple of final touches and its complete
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/aaa7.jpg)

and one of the extra bits we're adding as it goes back together
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/aaa6.jpg)

and the answer to your question is YES (i'm almost positively sure  ??? )

Hey Weddo you just beat me to it.I was too lazy to go back and see if it had always been a "redddgrey" motor.Still looks very cool.Keep up the great photos Suferboy.

Now you boys are assuming that when I said GREY motor ...
that I meant an Australian grey motor.

I was going to post details of the motor at a later date

and

settle the "Canadian" grey motor debate once and for all !
( and it goes a little way to explain how I blew the budget )

But at the moment it's all top secret until after the Nats and the article appears in print in an upcoming edition of Gasoline mag

And the beat build goes on

Ticking off some jobs
Windows are all in, rooflining/visors are in, light fitting is fitted, rear view mirror polished and in
It's all polished and the trim is going back on

and then some more bits got ripped of the "Ugly Duckling"

Plan A   pull off the front bumper and swap the good bits for the bad bits
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/1x.jpg)
It was 40+ Celsius (in the shade) and Flames couldn't get under the car on the trolley and ended up lying on the bitumen. (this is why I don't do these things.. I do lots of overtime !)

BUT... one rusty, round nut and bolt and doing the job during my lunch break meant going to
Plan B
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/1d.jpg)
Just pull off the piece needed and cable tie the remainder to the body so it doesn't drag on the ground !

The steering wheel is at the shop being turned into a "sports" steering wheel
seats are being trimmed as I type, and the door panels are being done.

Just a drive shaft to go back on, paint the wheels, fit a bit more trim put interior back together, put some carpet on the floor

AND
IT'S DONE   ;D  ;D  ;D   (nearly)

It's neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrlllllllyy   finished   (?)

The new "original style sports type" steering wheel gets a trial fit

and the new front seat gets a trial fit, so the gearshift for the 3spd gearbox can be located properley

AND
you guessed it

more bits got pulled off the "ugly duckling"

Coupla days and it'll be finished  ;D

Surferboy, aren't you scared of it getting DIRTY? I reckon you'll be too paranoid to drive it.

Colin.

I was thinking of finding a long dusty gravel road that runs alongside a swamp and driving through there at full speed with the headlights on to attract lots of bugs  :o :o :o

and then turning up to the Nats with the wagon in its usual condition (minus the rusty bits and the gaffa tape holding it together)

 :D :D :D

Does the rebuild now mean I have to park in the far corners of the Coles carpark and WALK  :o to the shop ?
Can I still throw bags of manure in the back like I used to ?

And can I put my saltwater soaked longboard on the roof after one of my early morning surfing sessions ?

its your car surferboy, you can do all of those things. It would be a shame though, you probably will again in 10 years or so.

Surfboards maybe but that nice white seat might not like a bag of manure..

11 months of blood sweat and tears (for Flames..... not me  ;D)
For me its 11 months of overtime (and LOTS more still to come  :o ) to pay for it.

But it's NEARLY finished

It's back on the road  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Flames drove it over to the upholsterers (No 2) last week to finish the interior

and work begins
 (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/7-2.jpg)

got the call yesterday to check it out
first time in 11 months I've seen it in the sun... and the blue bits in the shade  ::)

added the touch of blue to the two tone grey panels to brighten them up and tie it together with the exterior. It continues the flow from the dashboard and is the reverse of the exterior stripe
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/5-4.jpg)

plain simple black carpet and boot over the "unique prototype" 1959 3spd manual floor shift
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/3-5.jpg)

some new paint and scuff plates look much better
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/2-5.jpg)

really looks like a car again at last
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/4-5.jpg)

still deciding what to do here
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b354/surferboyandcathy/rebuild/liner1.jpg)
as rooflining got fitted earlier with windows but windlacing didn't get fitted
do I take the easy pinchweld option to trim the rooflining
Has anybody else trimmed their FC with pinchweld ? (does it look OK ?)
(see discussion in modifications post)

Back to Flames this week for last bits to be fitted

And I'll be cruising at the Nats  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
