Title: Front brakes siezed .
Post by: Dave Lakin (Davo Lako) on August 15, 2011, 12:59:07 PM
Re-activating  my FE after it has been "Idle" for 8 years and (surprise) the front brakes were siezed ...

Managed to back off the brake shoes and get the drum off one side but the near side will not budge ...

Tried backing off the brake cylinder but the adjusting cover of the  wheel cylinder is siezed on both ends ...

One can of WD40 and two weeks later it won't budge ...got to it with a big hammer but no good ... got a BIGGER hammer but no good ... got a F####  big hammer but still jammed ...

Short of attacking it with an angle grinder , has anyone got any ideas ??

Will removing the bolt from the brake anchor  help ?

If I have to resort to more violence (ie , the angle grinder) , has anyone got a set of drums for sale ???

Regards , Dave .

what about bolting an old rim on, then welding a long bar/tube to it and trying to crack it that way  :-\

If time is not important, a good extended soak with neat Molasses will kill the rust. May take a few days of application (because soaking in a Molasses bath is not possible).

Can only really think of getting a puller onto it and try yanking it off that way  but you might have to sacrifise the bearing dust cover in the centre to do so.  :-\

Im guessing you have already tried sitting the car on the ground with its own weight on the wheels and rocking it back and forth?

this seems to free up stuck drums when the handbrake has been left on and car not driven over a long period.

Cheers

Ed

"now all I need is two new Wheel cylinders !!!"

You could have a brake service place repair your old cylinders or have them re sleeved with stainless steel. Probably cheaper than new cylinders

You could try Nepean Spares, St Marys NSW, ask for Geoff, they will have them.

Take them to a head place or someone with a bead blaster do the whole lot re paint and clean it all up re hone and re build the cylinders you dont get quality like them 50 year old part.

Looks like it came off easier after you took the wheel nuts off.... :P ...hehehe...I bought brand new wheel cylinders for mine a few months ago and they cost me $66 each from my local brake guy here in SA.Not Stainless but for that price, who cares?....

Hi David,
Great pictures so far. A question for you on where your $15.95 Gear/ hub puller came from ?
It looks to be a very handy tool for the toolbox and at a reasonable price too.
Keep up the good work (go the mighty FE)
Cheers Stewy   8)

Hi Stewie . Got mine from Not Just Tools in Wauchope ... Should be able to pick one up at most tool shops but the 6 inch  jaws are perfect for  the drums . Let me know if you want one . Cheers Dave .
