Technical Board / Modification Help / Power Booster not very powerful

Hi guys I have a braking delema just over twelve months ago I purchased another project a modified FE Special Sedan. Fitted with a 179 red motor ,syncro 3 speed ,floor shift, LC/LJ Torana rear end and drum brakes,HR front end with LH/LX disc rotors and calipers , VH44 remote booster ,HQ master cylinder mounted on a hadfield adaptor. the car was driven onto a trailer then off again driven once around the block then into the garage for major rust removal,A pillars front floor pans, inner and outer front sections of sills. I also installed a replica hadfield chassis kit. The motor recieved further mods with the addition of tripple 1-3/4 SU carbs, yella terra head with large valves and an XU-1 style of camshaft. The next time the car was driven was tuesday before the nationals and of course to the nationals. The probiem is the car has a very hard wooden feeling brake pedal, I dont recall the feel of the pedal on the day of the quick drive around the block. So my questions are is this a faulty brake booster? a lack of vacumme due to camshaft timing and duration? Do i need a vacumme tank? How do i test a booster unit? Or should i install afirewall mounted booster / master cylinder unit and rear brake proportioning valve? Install an alternator with a vacumme pump? maybe Ken or someone else may have some ideas. thanks in advance Simon Addison

Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: fitting CRS fender well extractors to SBC in F

on: March 04, 2007, 12:56:44 AM

Thank you Custom FC for your timely reply I was going to try the rod shop but last time i spoke to them no one there now seemed to of actually done the installation.
Thankyou glenn for you photos and advice they have given me exactly the guide i was looking for.
I will post photos of my progress in the near future
Simon Addison
PS does any one know how easy an LH/LX Torana front end goes into an FC. After talking with Alan Hale this morning i may ditch my Hadfield HR front end in favor of one of those any ideas?

Technical Board / Modification Help / fitting CRS fender well extractors to SBC in FC
|
on: February 28, 2007, 10:48:32 AM

Can someone please give me some advice on fitting a set of Castlemaine Rod Shop fender well extractors. Does anyone have a clear photo of a set installed? When the correct cut out has been made should the extractors be able to be installed / removed with small block chev still residing in the engine bay? I am trying to measure twice and only cut once i dont want to remove to much sheet metal only to have to weld more back. Is there a template or approximate dimensions of where to cut? thanks guys Simon Addison

Technical Board / General Technical / Re: MIG WELDER -SIZE DOES MATTER?
|
on: August 25, 2006, 08:50:29 AM
|
Hi guys thought i might add my two bobs worth to the MIG welding debate. 17 years ago i bought myself an SPI MIGMATE 120 from a panel beater mate. It sort of welded ok, after i fixed the wire feed repeatedly. It never performed really well , the welds seemed to only sit on top of what ever i was welding. I am only a self taught hobby welder. So i thought it was just me, as i would hate to blame my tools. It was my birthday recently and i received a new toy ,A Cigweld 220 mig welder running 0.6 wire on Argo shield light. I am now having a ball with it. It cost me good dollars but its well worth it. My mig welding ability improved instantly, i think it comes down to right size and quality tool for the job. PS Anyone want to buy an SPI Migmate 120 catch you later Simins

Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: brake booster chev toploader install

Ken i have test fitted the wheels they will run realy close to the front guards . I have also purchased a set of adaptors from Hoppers Stoppers to run a set of Leyland P76 disc rotors, which have had the stud pattern changed to HQ pattern. Note this is for mock up purposes only. If it works succesfully a new set of blank drilled rotors to suit P76 with HQ stud pattern will be sourced through DBA. P76 rotors run approximatley 20 mm a side narrower track am yet to mock up and confirm exact measurement ,thanks for the input .This is a terrific site Simon

Jason thanks for the input on the front end i bought my chassis kit with the front end completely rebuilt and powder coated having never been installed so it was to good to pass up. Mine is a front steer rack conversion. Am currently dont know if a rear steer rack would give sump clearance for chev. I am running the HQ stud pattern because of my wheel choice which are 7 inch pontiac firebird rims.A factory 7 inch version of HQ GTS rims. Ill have to see just how steering lock is when i hit the streets. Thanks again Simon

Russ thanks for interest yes i am installing the chev myself using a CRS chassis kit and CRS hr front end with HQ discs and calipers . will possibly upgrade to aluminium HZ calipers the rear end is narrowed nine inch with VN axels and discs and calipers remachined to HQ stud pattern.
Ken thanks for your reply i have since looked at a VT booster /master cylinder it appears the way to go although i think the clutch master cylinder will require a slight sideways relocation thanks again for both replies i hope to be at next melbourne meeting to join up Simon
