Here's an old pic showing an FE with the rear quater painted out. This seems a fairly popular thing to do back then. Strange that you don't see it much today. I think most would have painted this area to match the roof, but you could introduce a 3rd colour if you wanted.

That color combo pattern was quite popular in the FE range in particular as the colors were not as two tone and distinctive as in the FC. In the Holden tune up manual of Keith Winser's late 1957 on page 100 there is a wide range of alternatves to what is shown in the picture.
