All the chrome plating has been done - very expensive but very happy. A Class in Lonsdale SA did the chrome work. All the wiring is finished and tested and the engine is running again. I’ll put the dash back together next week. Next job is the body work - a tiny amount of rust repairs needed and a few small dents. Cheers, Wasim Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Technical Board / General Technical / Alternator exciter wire question
|
on: April 22, 2023, 08:21:58 AM

The last piece to wiring the car is the alternator exciter wire. I've tested all the wiring - all good - and got the motor running only to find the alternator wasn't charging. I'm using a 55 amp alternator with a built in regulator and thought it would start charging once a certain rpm was reached??? but not so - therefore I'll try it with an exciter wire.
I have a Wilsonia gauge and from what I can see if I'm going to have an ignition light (exciter) it is with the temp tell tale?
I'm confused in that the temp tell tale gets power from the ignition and is grounded to the engine block when the temp rises too high.
Where do I connect to exciter wire from the alternator??
Cheers in advance, Wasim

I started with a holden rear bar - can't remember what it was off (?) - anyway I fitted to the rear end with no shockers in place to determine where it would hit the shockers and then with some measurements - a cardboard template - using oxygen acetylene - bend the bar - had to adjust a couple of times.
Once the clearance of the shockers was good I then installs to mounting points to the chassis rails.

Hello Al - Ebay - search "Nylon ball bearing pulley wheels" - find a vendor - from memory there are 4 sizes - select 23mm - I paid $6.60 for 8 wheels (no freight).
Bunnings sell them as well - but I couldn't get 23mm.
Regards, Wasim
PS - don't let earlybitz know anotherwise they will be $100 each!!!!

I think I’ve answered my own question. I purchased some 23mm nylon ball bearing pulley wheels - which is the size that fits inside the glass runner. The photos show the original versus the modifications. Cheers, Wasim Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thank you once again Rob - I’ll try and fit a fuse in somewhere?
I’ll tackle almost everything on the car with some confidence - but with electrics I’m very wary - some might say get an auto electrician - but that defeats the purpose of having the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
That reminds me - need to find an accessible place for an extinguisher 😂😂😂

Hello, I've got a Wilsonia gauge and a 55 amp alternator in the ute.
What's the best wiring set up for the amp gauge in the situation?
Thanks in advance.
Regards, Wasim
