Check that the rotor button is turning when the engine is cranked, this will eliminate either a broken, timing gear, distributor drive or rotor button, also check that the rotor to coil lead connection in the inside middle of the distributor cap is in place and serviceable. If all that appears fine it may be a condenser issue.
Hope this helps, Wayne

Ken is most likely correct in his diagnosis but as an added precaution you may also want to check that your ignition switch is returning to the on position after releasing the key.

Just a thought why not flip your plan on its head and build a good standard and use the special as a donor. Good quality standards are much fewer on the ground than specials.

Assuming the valves are adjusted correctly and if the timing and centrifugal and vacuum advance check out OK and even though you have had the carburettor done it may be a low float level or incorrect main jet which is starving the engine of petrol or possibly a loose baffle in the muffler/s or bent tailpipe etc that are causing a restriction. Also check that the exhaust manifold is sealed at the gasket area/s.

Take the hinge off (on the set where the longest shoe is at the back) and put it back on in the same hole but on the reverse side of the shoe, and reassemble with the longest shoe to the front on both sides.

As well as the previous posts check that there is no air leak at the carburettor which is usually caused by the carburettor and base becoming loose, they are both held together by two large screws which are accessible for tightening once the air cleaner is removed.

I would suggest looking at the following possible causes;
* soft or broken engine or gearbox mounts * loose bellhousing bolts * cracked bellhousing * cracked or broken gearbox crossmember * sticking clutch slave or master cylinders * and as said before oil or other debris on the flywheel
Hope this helps, cheers Wayne

Their are two types of kits one for the standard non vacuum and one for the vacuum fuel pump. You should be able to get the bits for the vacuum pump section or alternatively buy a complete vacuum pump kit from the same place you bought the one you have now and exchange the standard one.
Hope this helps, Wayne
