Can someone please confirm I've got the correct order of the valves beginning at the front cylinder?
My observations are:
1 2 3 4 5 6
Ex I, I Ex Ex I, I Ex, Ex I, I Ex
Sorry, I know this is basic stuff but..... I need to know I'm right.
Also, does anyone know what cleans off Permatex #2 non-hardening gasket sealer? I've tried petrol and iso propyl alcohol to remove from the rocker cover but no luck.
Cheers, Ken

Sorry....I wasn't real clear in my first post. Doing the tappets and just want to be sure I know which is exhaust and which is inlet.

Yep you are right. All you have to do is picture the manifold up against the side of the head and you can see the pattern.

For Permatex No. 2, I'd try turps, and if that doesn't work, metho.

Remember: if your Holden's not leaking oil, it doesn't have any.

Thank you.
Just out of interest, would tappet clearance be smaller or larger when the engine is cold?
I always assumed the clearance would be greater when cold but was told recently the gap widens as the engine heats up.

I have never really thought about it ,but I always use less clearance than spec as I believe oils have improved . I guess engine block would expand but so would lifters ,push rods ,rockers and towers so I don't think there would be much in it . I would gap at around 6 & 8 and listen for rattles and or exhaust popping and any rough idle .

Did the tappets on the weekend. Can't believe the improvement. Smoother idle and better engine performance. I have never bothered too much with them before but will make this a regular part of the maintenance from now on. Gave up trying to adjust them with the engine running but did take a preliminary reading as it idled. The engine was hot and I simply switched off to adjust them one at a time, making sure I kept it at operating temperature. Had a mate to help which made it easier but it took quite a few goes to get some of them right. And as I was told, the clearance increases as the engine heats up. On average about 5 thou.
