I don’t seem to be able to get the vacuum-operated wipers to work correctly, despite having bought a 2nd wiper motor. Connected solely to the vacuum tube (ie wiper motor removed from body of car), when switched on, the wiper arm mechanism turns anti-clockwise (viewed from front of car) and stops, and only returns to clockwise position when unit is switched off.
Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Phil, sounds as if you have bought another dud motor, seals dry out and harden letting air past.  Try opening up the unit and putting some rubber grease in the chamber to seal the sides. Not a long term fix, but it should show whether it is the seal or not.
