Dave,
"If it sounds OK, it is OK."
I would only suggest getting your gearbox rebuilt if
- it's noisy in any gear. For example, first only or first and second only (gear teeth condition or bad cluster gear bearings)
- it makes a whirring sound as you accelerate through 30 mph in top (mainshaft bearing)
- it's noisy just as you shift out of first (damaged gear teeth)
- it crunches into second or top (synchros, but make certain your clutch disengages properly).
What are your gearbox's symptoms?

Hi Rob
Thanks for the reply, the reason i'm looking for a someone to have a look at the box is that it was given to me by a friend
he said it ran ok when he took it out, but it has been under a tarp for the last 3 years.
I thought get it seen to and i would have a spare for my 2 fe"s.
Cheers

Dave,
Rotate the shafts a few turns by hand with the box in neutral. They should feel smooth to turn, not lumpy or gritty.
Then do the same thing in each gear. Again, the shafts should rotate smoothly by hand.
You can get an indication of the condition of first gear this way: Shift the gearbox about a quarter of the way into first. You'll probably have to hold the selector in this position to stop it going back into neutral. With your free hand, rotate the input shaft. If the gear teeth are in good condition, the gearbox will turn over smoothly. If there is an occasional clunking sound, you might have chipped teeth.
If you're keen, take the bottom cover off the gearbox. Inspect the cover for iron filings and teeth (hopefully none), and the gears for missing teeth, chips or pitting. Take a few close-up shots of the gears and post them up here. The gearbox nerds among us will be happy to appraise your gearbox.
(And a thin bead of Silastic will seal the bottom cover up good as new, without replacing the cork gasket.)
