Hi all, setting up the timing on 138 grey, put a pertronix electronic ignition in, new coil, semi new leads and plugs but she still won't start. The ball on the flywheel to identify that it is 7 degrees advance
The carby has been refurbished 3 months ago, had a new pump diaphragm Kit in but still won't start, any ideas?
On straigh fuel or a start ya bastard type sprays it will backfire through the carb
My dad passed away when I was 6, now 16 and working on it, I need some help please! Q

Backfiring thru the carb indicates that the timing is out, either ignition or worse - cam timing! Have you checked that the plug leads are fitted in the correct order?  Fraze

Pull the tappet cover and turn the motor til the back 2 lifters[rockers] are rocking[exhaust then intake valve] . The front 2 should be loose [should be able to see the ball indicator on the flywheel now and not 180 degrees out] . Now put the dizzy in so as it locates [drops into the slot in the pump] it[rotor button] faces number 1 on the dizzy cap[you may have to turn the oil pump by putting a long screwdriver down the dizzy hole til it lines up]  . As you try to start the engine, get someone to turn the dizzy slightly and you should find it will fire up . Cheers Haydn
