Anyway,If you might still happen to have one could you please let me know...or even if you might know of where else I could get one from. Thanks very much! Miss Brown.

hey guys we have a problem

we have the fc with the 350

lj torana column, the column is 2 close 2 the dash and the plastic peace wont fit and the other problem is the speedo facia has been chromed alon with the glovebox and there are holes around the facia

what 2 do?

Title: Re: FC Dash Surrounds
Post by: RET on January 21, 2005, 02:08:49 AM
First, you will note that the boards here are grouped into meaningful categories, and your question really belongs in "Modification Help".

The fat column shroud from Toranas and Kingswoods of that era don't fit very well with the dash shroud.  This is a close-up of johnrap's dash, which doesn't have the dash shroud.

Seems to me you either have to alter the shape of the column shroud to suit the dash shroud, go with a different column, or get an FE dash chromed, which doesn't have the shroud screw holes.  Or like John, create a knock-out customised dash ;D

cheers

Has anyone received one of these yet?

I orderd one in May and the local RS supplier doesn't seem to know what's taking so long.

Title: Re: FC Dash Surrounds

I approved the original prototype and a complete order was placed - when they arrived a trial fit was made to check that they were right and they were not right. The supplier had not reproduced the same quality that had been achieved on the prototype. So the whole lot were sent back for replacement. Still waiting for a new batch to arrive which hopefully will be better.

Can't do much about it really.

Rare Spares released the FC Dash Facia last week & I picked up a new one yesterday & returned it today as it did not fit correctly.

Has any one else purchased one of these in the last week & tried to fit it as they only had one other in store & it was the same as the one I returned.

I took in a complete dash panel with instruments with the original Holden facia to show the difference betwen the two & the staff also agreed that the new facia's were not correct & refunded my money & advised head office.

The moulding on the facia seems to be too deep & sits proud where it fits over the fuel & idiot light guage & does not fit flush enough onto the steel dash so that when mounted you can see the 2 top screw holes quite clearly & also the gaps around the guages.

It doesn't seem to fit too bad if no guages are fitted.

Just wondering what went wrong & hopefully we will have some soon that fit just perfect.

Rob.

hey

i`d like to know this aswell as i`m the person who kindly lent their NOS dash surround to rares so
they could get it reproduced .

i know the first batch came through as a dud run .

so does this mean the second batch has come through crap aswell ?

or did some of the first batch filter through the system into a few of the rares out lets ?   :-\

Title: Re: FC Dash Surrounds
Post by: mcl1959 on November 06, 2009, 06:38:03 PM
I will ring next week & find out. I have not seen or approved a second batch yet.

It does sound like the second batch are not quite right though since the first batch wouldn't even screw to the dash.

Post by: rob_jensen on November 07, 2009, 01:01:49 PM
Thanks guy's
Funny that they were released with out running the new batch through you guy's for approval, I had one on order & received a call last week as they were ready.

They do screw to the dash now but just don't fit very well.
The left & right screw holes above the fuel & light guage look to have been re located & have some sort of white body filler inserted to correct the screw hole location.

Have to wait & see what Ken finds out when he calls next week.

Rob.

I am very disappointed with this outcome - apparently because the original was approved, the order cannot be returned. So the ones for sale are the ones that I have deemed no good.
Now those of you who know me would know that I am a supporter of Rare Spares because the vast majority of the parts they sell are good value even though some need a little rework to fit precisely.
HOWEVER, in this case I would suggest NOT buying this product because I do not believe it suits the purpose.

Ken, what are the repro's made of ? Mine was always good but when i checked my dash last week it has started to disintergrate, i'm now in the same boat as everyone else in need of one.

Title: Re: FC Dash Surrounds

The repros are made of plastic - the same as original. Not fiberglass.

I'm going to be needing a new surround when the wagon goes back together. I think mine is way beyond repair.

Are there any on the market that fit properly ?
Have Rare Spares fixed the problem ones ?

These are now for sale at Rare Spares outlets. We have seen a new one at the club which looked reasonably good - once again it was not given to us to approve which is disappointing.

I forgot to reply to this thread :P
The dash surrounds have been in for a while but since it is being sold as a kit with screws, they were waiting for one particular short screw that goes in the bottom of the dash surround. It had to come from the USA. Seems amazing that it was not available in Australia.

G'day all, I have just returned from picking up the new dash facia from Rares Prospect. I've done a test fit on dash panel and it fits really well. The only thing I had to do was ream out the screw holes a little to get the screws started, then fitted it up.

Looking it up in the parts book :

Instrument Panel Shield
round head cross recess tap. type "BT"  No. 6--- 20 x 3/8"
part number  273866  x 4

can figure out all but "BT"  ???

still only have FE so dont know about these later models and modern features  :D

Title: Re: FC Dash Surrounds
Post by: mcl1959 on December 02, 2011, 07:15:26 PM
"BT" means that the screw has a cut out in the start of the thread specifically for screwing it into plastic where a normal screw would split the plastic - this is why the screws could not be sourced here - they are a special plastic screw

Club price was $70 they have two different size screws, three for the top & sides and a longer one for the bottom. As I said yesterday I found the part fitted fine, it looks great and was worth the wait. Now it will have to wait for the rest of the car so I can see how good it all looks.
